Company

Hutchison Whampoa Limited

A historic Hong Kong conglomerate whose businesses were later merged into CK Hutchison Holdings.

Background

Hutchison Whampoa Limited was a large Hong Kong-based conglomerate whose businesses covered ports, property, retail, infrastructure, energy and telecommunications; its businesses were later merged into CK Hutchison Holdings Limited.

According to an April 2010 report by the Economic Observer, COLI had always taken Hong Kong companies such as Hutchison Whampoa and SHKP as its models, emphasising risk control, being relatively cautious in its development and pursuing quality growth, which was one of the reasons it kept lowering its loan ratio. The report said that when the domestic property market boomed from 2005 to 2007, many companies chose highly leveraged expansion, with debt-to-asset ratios exceeding 70%, whereas COLI’s debt-to-asset ratios over the same period were 42%, 45% and 52% respectively, and only 46.8% in 2008.
